History
The station opened as Hara-Machida station on 23 September 1908, when the Yokohama Railway opened its line from Higashi-Kanagawa to Hachiōji. On 1 October 1917 the line was nationalized and became the Yokohama Line. On 1 April 1927 Shin-Haramachida station opened after residents of Tsurukawa and Machida asked for it. On 1 April 1929 the Odakyu Enoshima Line opened from Ōno signal box (now Sagami-Ōno station) to Katase-Enoshima. Passengers changed between the Odawara and Enoshima lines at Shin-Haramachida. On 1 October 1932 the line between Higashi-Kanagawa and here was electrified, and the Yokohama Line was split at this station.
On 5 April 1941 electric trains began running through from here to Hachiōji, and the whole Yokohama Line was back in service. In November 1944 express services were cancelled as the war worsened. On 1 October 1946 semi-express trains were set up with stops here. In October 1957 the platforms were lengthened to take six-car trains. On 23 December 1958 the Odakyu Store Machida opened. On 25 March 1960 commuter semi-express services were set up.
On 27 April 1967 the Odakyu Enoshima express began stopping here. On 1 October 1971 the Asagiri express began stopping here. On 11 April 1976 the station was renamed Machida. On 23 September 1976 the Machida Station Building opened, with the Odakyu Department Store Machida. On 1 April 1980 the JNR Hara-Machida station moved to this site and was renamed Machida. Pedestrian decks linking the two stations were completed on 24 October 1980.
On 29 October 1983 the Machida Terminal Plaza opened, and the old east ticket gate was moved into it. On 1 April 1987 the JNR station became part of JR East. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable. On 11 December 2004 the Romance car Sagami began stopping here, and fast express and section semi-express services were set up with stops here. In March 2006 shops including NEWDAYS and Beck's Coffee opened in the concourse. In September 2010 the Odakyu Twin Pal building closed for renovation, and the elevated structure was made earthquake-resistant. On 7 December 2011 the Odakyu Marche opened in the renovated building.
On 17 December 2016 a new type of smart platform door was trialled on one car's length of the Yokohama Line platform. The trial was widened in 2017. On 17 March 2018 a new commuter semi-express began stopping here. On 28 October 2019 a private booth for video calls, the telecube, was installed outside the gates. On 15 November 2023 the stopping targets for trains were changed for the platform door work. On 16 December 2023 the east exit gate became unstaffed all day, and the automatic ticket machine was moved beside the north gate. On 17 February 2024 large-opening platform doors for limited express trains came into use on the upbound platforms. On 2 March 2024 the same type came into use on the downbound platforms. On 29 July 2025 smart platform doors started on the Yokohama Line platforms. On 6 March 2026 a talking seat-reservation ticket machine was introduced.
