History

The station opened on 16 March 1885 as a Nippon Railway station, for passengers only. Nippon Railway was nationalized on 1 November 1906. The station became part of the Yamanote Line on 12 October 1909. The Meguro Kamata Electric Railway, now Tokyu, opened its station on 11 March 1923.

On 15 November 1991 the turnback point of the Meguro Line was moved about 500 m toward Fudomae. The Tokyu station became underground on 27 July 1997. On 6 August 2000 the Meguro Line was split off as the Meguro Line and the Tokyu Tamagawa Line, and this station became a station of the Meguro Line. On 26 September 2000 the Namboku and Mita subway lines opened, with through running to the Tokyu Meguro Line.

A link passage between the Tokyu station and the JR west exit opened on 28 April 2001. Suica could be used at JR from 18 November 2001. The subway station passed to Tokyo Metro on 1 April 2004. PASMO could be used from 18 March 2007.

Platform doors came into use on the Yamanote Line on 28 August 2010. The Tokyu ticket office closed on 30 April 2021. A customer support call system was installed at the Tokyu connecting gate on 9 December 2023. Eki-net Q Ticket began on 1 October 2025.
