History
The Japan Railway opened Ebisu as a freight station on 25 February 1901, mainly for shipping beer. It moved a short distance toward Shibuya on 16 April 1906. Passenger service began on 30 October 1906. The Japan Railway was nationalised on 1 November 1906, and on 12 October 1909 the station was assigned to the Yamanote Line. A tram stop of the Tamagawa Electric Railway opened in front of the station on 29 March 1927. Air raids burned the station building on 24 May 1945. A two-storey reinforced concrete building was finished on 17 April 1952.
The Hibiya Line station opened on 25 March 1964. Automatic gates were installed on the Hibiya Line on 1 July 1974. The tram stop was abolished on 9 December 1967. Goods handling at the JR station ended on 15 November 1982, and the Sapporo Beer Tokyo plant siding closed at the same time. On 2 April 1986, one platform was added so that some temporary Yokosuka Line trains could run to the station, with a service from Shinjuku to Zushi. The car train departure point moved from Shiodome on 1 November 1986, and then to Hamamatsuchō on 21 December 1990.
The station was split up at the national railway's privatisation in 1987. JR East took over the station on 1 April 1987. Automatic gates were installed at the east exit on 17 November 1990, and at the west exit on 1 December 1990. The Saikyō Line was extended to the station on 16 March 1996. Because the trains could not turn back here, the trains that arrived at platform four were routed to Ōsaki to reverse. Atre Ebisu opened on 1 October 1997. Suica became usable at JR East on 18 November 2001, and Shōnan–Shinjuku line service began on 1 December 2001. On 1 December 2002, the Saikyō Line was extended to Ōsaki and linked with the Rinkai Line, and regular trains that started or ended at Ebisu stopped.
Tokyo Metro took over the Hibiya Line stations on 1 April 2004. PASMO became usable on the Tokyo Metro side on 18 March 2007. A colour electronic-paper advertising test began on 25 February 2008. The JR Yamanote Line started using platform doors on 26 June 2010, the first use of movable platform doors on a JR conventional line. On 6 June 2005, the Hibiya Line station used the theme from The Third Man as its departure melody. The Hibiya Line platform got a departure melody on 7 February 2020.
Shops and ticketing changed from 2013 onward. The Atre Ebisu third floor was renewed on 15 November 2013, and the fifth floor in October 2014. The Atre Ebisu West building opened on 15 April 2016, and the main building was renovated. On 6 June 2020, TH Liner trains began to end at Ebisu. The JR station was outsourced on 1 February 2021. The Tokyo Metro commuter pass office closed on 27 January 2023, and the Midori no Madoguchi counter closed on 31 August 2023. Eki-net Q-Ticket began on 1 October 2025.
