History
The first Daimaru Stop (大丸停留場) was a short distance toward Kawasaki from the present station. In November 1927 the Nambu Railway opened from Noborito, with Daimaru Stop as its terminus. On 11 December 1928 the line was extended to Yashiki-bun Station (屋敷分駅), now Bubaigawara Station. In 1931 Daimaru Stop was renamed Tama-Seisekiguchi Stop (多摩聖蹟口停留場).
On 21 October 1934 a freight station, Minami-Tamagawa (南多摩川駅), opened. On 14 September 1939 it absorbed Tama-Seisekiguchi Stop, moved to the present site and was renamed Minami-Tama Station. On 1 April 1944 the Nambu Railway was nationalised and the station became part of the Nambu Line of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1956.
On 1 April 1987 the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Automatic ticket gates were installed on 14 October 1993. The Suica IC card became usable on 18 November 2001. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 May 2009.
On 24 December 2011 the down line was moved onto an elevated structure. On 23 December 2013 the up line followed. The north exit opened on 1 April 2014.
On 14 March 2015 rapid trains began running the whole length of the Nambu Line, and this station became a stop that rapid trains pass. Smart platform doors started on 6 March 2024.
