History
The Odawara Express Railway opened its Shimo-Kitazawa station on 1 April 1927, on the Odawara Line. The Teito Electric Railway opened a second station on 1 August 1933. From 1937, Odawara Line express trains stopped here as a through stop. The Odawara Line's local trains ran the full route from 1945, and through running was ended then. In 1940, the Teito Electric Railway merged into the Odawara Express Railway, and on 1 March 1941 the Odawara Express Railway merged with the Kinugawa Hydroelectric company to form Odakyu Electric Railway. On 1 May 1942, the Teito line became part of the Tokyo Yokohama Electric group and was later named the Inokashira Line.
Express services were added on the Odawara Line after the war. Semi-express trains began on 1 October 1946. Express service returned on 1 October 1949, and commuter express trains began on 25 March 1955. Commuter semi-express trains began on 25 March 1960. Rapid semi-express trains began on 5 November 1964. Express trains on the Inokashira Line began on 15 December 1971.
Odakyu took over the Odawara Line on 1 June 1998, when Tokyu was broken up. The Inokashira Line passed to Keio. The Sakura semi-express began in September 1998. Shōnan and Tama express services began on 23 March 2002. Continuous grade separation and quadruple-track work started in September 2004. On 11 December 2004, rapid express and section semi-express services began, and the Shōnan express was abolished.
The station was rebuilt in stages from 2012. A summer-only rapid express began to stop here in 2012 for beach travel, and it has no link to the rapid express service that ran in 2012. The platform was made long enough for six-car trains on 1 May 2012. The Odakyu line was moved underground on 23 March 2013, and in July 2013 an event was held in the old ticket hall before demolition began. Section semi-express trains were abolished on 26 March 2016. On 3 March 2018, the stretch from Yoyogi-Uehara to Umegaoka was made quadruple-track, and the slow-line platform came into use. From 17 March 2018, commuter express and commuter semi-express trains stopped here, and the Tama express was abolished.
Ticket gates, platform doors and shops were added from 2019. Central ticket gates opened for the Odakyu and Inokashira lines on 16 March 2019, which separated the Odakyu and Keio gates. On 29 March 2019, a large ceramic relief based on the artwork of Takehiko Miyanaga, who designed Romancecar posters for many years, was placed on the Odakyu concourse wall. Platform doors started on the Odakyu slow-line platform on 30 March 2019, and on the express-line platform in December 2020. The Shimokitazawa Ekiue shopping facility opened on 1 November 2019. Platform doors were started on Inokashira platform two on 12 December 2021. The Mikan Shimokita shopping area opened under the Inokashira elevated line on 30 March 2022.
