Toride Station (取手駅) in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture, is run by East Japan Railway Company and Kantō Railway, serves the Jōban Line (Rapid) and Jōban Line (Local), and opened on 25 December 1896.
History
The station opened on 25 December 1896 as a Nippon Railway station. The Nippon Railway was nationalized on 1 November 1906. On 12 October 1909 the station became part of the Jōban Line. The Jōsō Railway opened on 1 November 1913.
Part of the station building was rebuilt in June 1930. On 20 March 1945 the Jōsō Railway absorbed the Tsukuba Railway, and the combined company was called the Jōsō Tsukuba Railway. The Japanese National Railways was formed on 1 June 1949.
On 6 February 1961 the Jōsō Line platform was separated from the Jōban Line, and a connecting overpass and ticket gate were built. The west station building was rebuilt in July 1964, paid for entirely by local residents. On 1 June 1965 the Jōsō Tsukuba Railway merged with Kashima Sangu Railway to form Kantō Railway. A Kirin Beer factory siding in Toride opened in December 1972. Freight handling on the Jōsō Line ended on 16 July 1974. Double track between here and Teramo was completed on 7 April 1977. Platforms were renumbered on 9 September 1979. On 15 November 1982 the second phase of the Jōban double track opened between Abiko and Toride, and one round trip of the Tokiwa express began stopping here. The Kirin siding closed on 1 February 1984. Parcel handling on the Jōban Line ended on 14 March 1985.
JR East took over on 1 April 1987. Boxhill Toride, a station building, opened on 1 October 1988. On 2 June 1992 a Kantō Railway Jōsō Line train crashed into the station building. Automatic ticket gates were added on 17 September 1993. Kantō Railway's stations got departure melodies on 1 April 1999. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. Kantō Railway's platforms were raised on 10 October 2003. PASMO became usable on Kantō Railway on 14 March 2009, with mutual use with Suica.
Work to replace the Tone River bridge on the fast tracks, south of the station, began in 2009. A new up track over the bridge opened on 8 December 2013. A pedestrian deck linking to the west exit opened on 28 March 2014. The bridge replacement was fully in use on 9 November 2014. On 14 March 2015, all limited express trains began passing through. The east exit ticket gate became unstaffed on 26 February 2017, run through a remote station support system. On 26 March 2020, Boxhill Toride was renamed Atre Toride. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 28 February 2023. On 9 January 2024, smart platform doors began on the Jōban local platforms.
