The Jōban Line (Rapid) (常磐快速線) is the name for the rapid service on the Jōban Line, run by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It runs from Ueno Station in Taitō ward, Tokyo, to Toride Station in Toride city, Ibaraki Prefecture.
History
On 20 April 1971, when the quadruple track between Kita-Senju and Abiko was finished, rapid service began between Ueno and Toride. At that time the rapid trains ran past Kashiwa station. Middle-distance trains, which ran through to Tsuchiura and Mito, passed Mikawashima, Minami-Senju, Kita-Senju, Kashiwa and Tennōdai. On 2 October 1972 the rapid trains began to stop at Kashiwa.
On 1 October 1980 all trains began to stop at Kashiwa. On 14 March 1985 all middle-distance trains began to stop at Kita-Senju. On 16 March 1991 commuter rapid trains began running.
On 9 July 2005 special rapid trains began running. On 18 March 2006 the commuter rapid trains were abolished. On 14 March 2015, with the opening of the Ueno-Tokyo Line (上野東京ライン), some trains ran through to Shinagawa station on the Tōkaidō Line (東海道線). The special rapid trains began stopping at Kita-Senju.
On 1 July 2026 the line was reorganised from the branch system to business headquarters. The section from Ueno to Kita-Senju came under the Ueno business headquarters, and the section from Matsudo to Toride under the Matsudo business headquarters.
