Odawara Station (小田原駅) is in Odawara, Kanagawa. JR East runs the Tōkaidō Line, JR Central runs the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, and Odakyu Electric Railway runs the Odakyu Odawara Line. The station opened on 21 October 1920.
History
The station opened on 21 October 1920 with the Atami Line between Kozu and here. An earthquake on 1 September 1923 partly collapsed the station building. The Atami Line was fully open to Atami on 25 March 1925. The Odawara Express Railway, now Odakyu, opened its line from Shinjuku to here on 1 April 1927. The national railway station was assigned to the Tokaido Main Line on 1 December 1934.
The Daiyuzan line, now the Izuhakone Railway Daiyuzan Line, began running into the station on 16 June 1935. The Hakone Tozan Railway began running trains here on 1 October 1935. Odakyu Romancecar services began in October 1948. Shonan Electric trains began on 1 March 1950. The Hakone Tozan Railway's Odawara city tram line closed on 31 May 1956.
The Tokaido Shinkansen began stopping here on 1 October 1964. The platforms were extended for 16-car trains in 1970. Freight handling was moved to a new Nishi-Sagami freight station on 20 May 1973. Escalators were added on the Shinkansen platforms on 1 November 1973. The east square and underground passage were completed in November 1976. The Tokaido freight line between Ofuna and Odawara was widened to four tracks on 1 October 1979. The Emperor and Empress travelled through Odawara to Hakone on 2 July 1980. Hikari trains began stopping on 1 October 1980.
Parcel handling ended on 1 November 1986. Freight handling resumed on 31 March 1987, and on 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up. JR East took over the Tokaido Line, JR Central the Shinkansen, and JR Freight the freight. Automatic ticket gates for the conventional lines came into use on 13 November 1995, and for the Shinkansen on 14 March 1998. Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. The Shonan-Shinjuku Line began on 1 December 2002.
A new station building opened on 30 March 2003, and the east-west free passage was completed on 20 December 2003. The Odakyu express services from this station began on 11 December 2004. The Odawara Lasca station building opened on the east side on 25 June 2005. The Hakone Tozan trains ended at this station on 18 March 2006, and from 15 March 2008 Odakyu express trains no longer ran into the Hakone Tozan line. A new platform came into use the same year. From 17 March 2018 Odakyu's down local trains no longer ran into Hakone Tozan.
