Osaki Station (大崎駅) is in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and is run by East Japan Railway Company and Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit. Its lines are the TWR Rinkai Line, the Saikyō Line, the Yamanote Line and the Shōnan–Shinjuku Line, and it opened on 25 February 1901.
History
A military connecting line opened in 1894 to link the Shinagawa line with the Oi liaison office, and ordinary freight trains also used it. Osaki Station opened on 25 February 1901 as a station on the Nihon Railway Shinagawa line, with a single island platform. On 1 August 1901 the military line became a branch of the Shinagawa line. Freight handling began on 15 October 1902. The Japan Railway was nationalized on 1 November 1906. On 12 October 1909 the station joined the Yamanote Line.
The Oi Works opened in 1915. Trains that ran through the connecting line to Oimachi stopped in 1916. In 1934 the Osaki branch line opened, linking the Tokaido freight line (the Hinzuru Line) with the Yamanote freight line.
On 24 May 1945, during the Pacific War, an air raid burned the platforms. In July 1965 the Meguro River and Hebigubo signal stations were merged into Osaki. In 1966 the station was made a raised station, and the Yamanote platforms were widened into island platforms. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1980. A private line to the Meidensha Osaki plant had also used the station for freight.
Japanese National Railways became JR East on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates opened on 17 November 1990. On 16 March 1996 the Saikyō Line was extended to Ebisu. Trains could not turn back there, so they ran empty to Osaki and turned back here. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. On 1 December 2002 the Rinkai Line was extended to Osaki, and Saikyō Line trains began running through to it. The Shōnan–Shinjuku Line began stopping here. The concourse was widened, a south ticket gate opened, and the old gate became the north gate.
The south passage was widened from November 2010. Platform doors began on the Yamanote main platforms on 22 December 2012. Sotetsu through trains began on 30 November 2019. The STATION BOOTH shared office opened inside the north gate on 29 October 2020. Limited express Shōnan trains began stopping here on 14 March 2022. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 28 February 2023.
