History
Matsudo station opened on 25 December 1896 as a station of the Nihon Railway. The Nihon Railway was nationalized on 1 November 1906. From 12 October 1909 the station belonged to the Jōban Line. On 11 December 1936 the line between Nippori and Matsudo was electrified. Short-distance trains between Ueno and Matsudo became electric trains, and Matsudo became the starting station for them.
On 18 June 1952 a new east station building opened. On 21 April 1955 the Shin-Keisei Line station opened beside the JNR station. On 27 December 1966 a freight wagon that was shunting across the main line hit a passing JNR electric train. No one was hurt. On 20 April 1971 the Jōban Line was made four tracks, and local trains began through running with the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. The station then had three platform faces and six tracks.
On 2 April 1977 the Box Hill Matsudo station building opened. On 17 January 1987 the platforms were extended for fifteen-car trains, and fifteen-car middle-distance trains began running. On 1 April 1987 the JNR station became part of JR East. On 1 August 1987 a west elevated deck and an east-west passage were completed. On 19 March 1994 the JR and Shin-Keisei ticket gates were separated, and middle gates were installed.

On 1 October 2018 the gates at the station building's north and west exits became IC card only, and their ticket machines were removed.
On 24 January 2021 an eSports station opened on the former Budget Plaza site. It closed on 31 October 2023. On 6 January 2024 the Matsudo city administration service centre moved into Atre Matsudo. On 24 May 2024 a cashless NewDays shop opened inside the ticket gates. On 16 June 2024 the east staircase of the station building closed, and new stairs were built on the former east-west passage. On 1 April 2025 Shin-Keisei Electric Railway was absorbed by Keisei Electric Railway, and its stations became part of the Keisei Matsudo Line. On 31 August 2025 the east exit of the station building closed, and a connecting passage was built from the old east-west passage to the Keisei Matsudo Line. On 21 September 2025 the JR ticket office moved, and the passages were changed. JR East planned to widen the east-west passage in spring 2026. A new station building on the south side was planned to open in spring 2027.
